Normal Labour

Normal labor, also known as natural childbirth, is the process by which a woman’s body naturally delivers one or more babies from the uterus to the outside world. It is typically divided into three stages: the opening of the cervix (dilation), the birth of the baby, and the delivery of the placenta.

Labor usually starts on its own, but sometimes it may need to be induced medically for various reasons. The exact cause of the start of natural labor is not completely understood but is thought to involve a complex interplay of hormonal signals between the baby and the mother’s body.

Types of Normal Labor:

  • Spontaneous labor: Labour that starts on its own without any medical intervention.
  • Induced labor: Labour that is started or speeded up with medical or surgical interventions.
  • Assisted delivery: This includes the use of forceps or vacuum devices to help deliver the baby, if necessary.

Types of Services for Normal Labour:

  • Prenatal Care: Regular medical check-ups during pregnancy to ensure the health of both mother and baby.
  • Birth Planning: Discussions about birth preferences, including pain relief options, positions for labor and birth, and preferences for interventions during labor and birth.
  • Labor and Birth Care: Monitoring and care during labor and birth to ensure the safety and health of the mother and the baby.
  • Postnatal Care: Check-ups after birth to monitor the recovery of the mother and the health of the baby. This can include breastfeeding support and discussions about postpartum mental health.

When to see a doctor:

A woman should go to the hospital or birthing center when contractions come regularly (about every 5 minutes for at least an hour), if her water breaks, or if she is experiencing any other concerns such as reduced fetal movement. Regular check-ups during pregnancy are also crucial to assess the health of the mother and the baby, and to plan for the birth. Dr Seema and her team are experts in normal delivery and ensuring a smooth process for the mother and her child.
