Causes:

Infertility can result from problems in either or both partners involved. Female infertility might be caused by issues such as

• Ovulation disorders
• Uterine or cervical abnormalities
• Damage to or blockage of the fallopian tubes
• Early menopause, or 
• Conditions like endometriosis and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS).

Types of Infertility:

Infertility primarily presents in two types:

Primary Infertility: This refers to couples who have never been able to conceive despite trying.

Secondary Infertility: This refers to couples who have previously achieved pregnancy at least once, but are now unable to conceive.

Symptoms: 

The main symptom of infertility is the inability to conceive. Other symptoms might be indicative of conditions causing infertility. In women, these can include:

• Irregularities in menstrual cycles
• Hormone fluctuations, or
• Other symptoms such as severe menstrual cramps

Types of Infertility Treatments:

Fertility Drugs: These drugs regulate or induce ovulation in women.

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI): Sperm are placed directly in the uterus during the time of ovulation.

Surgery: Surgical procedures can correct problems or improve fertility in both men and women.

Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART): This includes procedures like In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), where the egg and sperm are combined outside the body and then placed in the uterus, and Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI), where a single sperm is injected directly into an egg. 

Third-Party Assisted ART: This includes treatments involving egg donation, sperm donation, or gestational carriers (surrogates).

When to see a doctor: 

Couples should consider seeking medical advice if they’ve been unable to conceive after a year of regular, unprotected intercourse. It’s recommended that women should seek advice earlier from Dr Seema and her team if they’re over 35, or if they’ve noted irregular or absent periods, exceptionally painful periods, or have a history of multiple miscarriages, pelvic inflammatory disease, or conditions like endometriosis. Men should consider consulting a specialist if they’re aware of low sperm count, have a history of sexual or reproductive health issues, or have undergone treatment for cancer.
